The earth is estimated to be 4.5 billion years old.Agricultural humans have only been on this planet for 10,000 years.In that 10,000 years, man has had a very limited impact on the earth.
In the late 1700’s, the industrial revolution marked the shift from manufacturing in people’s homes to factories and mass production.
The greatest impact of the Industrial Revolution is seen in population growth.
In the year 1700, the world’s population was just 300 million.By 2016, just over 300 years, the world’s population exploded to 7.3 billion people. Greenhouse gasses trap heat from escaping the earth’s atmosphere.
Human activities are increasing Greenhouse Gas emissions exponentially.
There is no conjecture as to whether or not the world’s climate is increasing.
The political conjecture is whether or not Climate Change is due to man-made reasons.
Does it not seem slightly coincidental that the earth’s temperature rise also coincides with the rise in population and carbon emissions? Increases sea temperatures are melting the ice caps.
The melting ice caps also result in Sea Level Rise. Rising sea levels and temperatures increase storm activity and other natural disasters. And the worst part… Climate Change is just ONE environmental issue facing this world. But don’t cry for the earth.
The earth has been here for 4.5 billion years and will be here long after we are gone. It is the inhabitants of this planet we need to cry for. Our children will inherit the earth.
If we can instill in them the importance of sustainability, we CAN change the future.
Technological advancements along with changes in consciousness and the way we utilise resources can reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Don’t wait for political requirements. Policies always lag behind the required action. We have the opportunity to act now.
It is up to the children you mentor today to save our planet tomorrow.
